KHPG has many years of experience in human rights protection efforts, but Russia’s full-scale aggression has significantly changed its priorities and approaches to its work. In addition, all employees of the organization, being Ukrainians, have been affected by the devastating impact of the war. In the book, employees of the organization share their experiences of human rights protection work during the war.
This report identifies the main areas of work and their substance. In particular, we describe the effort to document war crimes and to create a single database containing generalized information about them. The submissions prepared by the organization’s lawyers and sent to the International Criminal Court are cited. Their subject matter is the most dangerous international crimes, including genocide against Ukrainians as a national group. The analytical aspect of the work is presented, including materials on the most important and painful events. Considerable attention is paid to one of the most difficult areas of the organization’s work — assistance to victims and survivors of crimes committed and continuing to be committed by the Russian Federation. These include trips to areas where hostilities are ongoing or located in proximity to the front line.
However, the heart of the book lies in the staff’s thoughts, memories, and reflections. Human rights defenders who continued their activities and did not stop assisting those in need are often victims themselves; they are people who live every day in a country where war has been going on for more than four years. This book captures their impressions. The book will be interesting to a wide range of readers, especially those who follow the war in Ukraine.
